For 61 years, the Herbert piano has been making, and is still making, exclusive designs and high-quality, custom-made pianos. Each piano conceived by the Herbert design department is conceived by a master craftsman from the drawing board to the delivery point. Because the pianos that are exported from the factory in Massachusetts are built in harmony with the musical performances of their musical instruments, each piano is designed to be a true musical instrument.
The grand piano is a wonderful instrument, but it is far from being perfect. The mystery of the sound of the piano is that it is the result of the combination of the sound-board, frame, action, and hammers which strike the strings of the piano. Any imperfection in the shape of the sound-board, in the weight and balance of its frame, in the construction of the action and the feel of its hammers, will affect the piano's sound. There are two regions of playing that require sound-board qualities - the very low range, called the "shoulder," and the upper range, called the "top" - and in this range, the sound-board touches the hammers for the first time, and, in fact, the sound of the piano comes from the interaction of this two-part structure. The action is a motor system for the hammers, and a carefully designed and connected mechanical network for transmitting the motion of the action. The tone-bars are the part of the action that make contact with the strings of the piano, and these tone-bars are very important in tying the action together with the soundboard and the hammers. The quality and fine balancing of these parts are essential to the very fine sound typical of a quality grand piano.
The quality of the hammer-stays can also affect the quality of the tone of the piano. It is important that the length of the hammer-stays needed to project the sound-board clear off the hammers be not too short or too long. The soundboard of the grand piano is 13.5 inches high; the additional spaces above and below the soundboard are the soundbox of the piano. This soundbox is usually made of two plates of wood glued together with a layer of wood veneer. d2c66b5586
